TENEBRAE Service -Palm Sunday Night at the Cathedral

The Latin word tenebrae means “shadow” and refers first of all to the fact that Tenebrae is celebrated at the Cathedral, in the shadows of Lent, as the light  fades away on Palm Sunday evening.  If you long to make your Holy Week more prayerful and your Easter richer, join us for this inspiring service, 7:00 pm Palm Sunday Night, March 20th.

As part of its two-year period of Eucharistic renewal, the Parish of Christ the King will host renowned philosopher, theologian and author Peter Kreeft, PhD, who will conduct a retreat April 1-2, at the parish located at 1519 South Quincy.  On April 1st, the retreat begins with dinner at 6:00 pm followed by an evening prayer service and two sessions.  The evening ends with a reception from 9pm to 10pm.  On April 2nd, the retreat continues with Mass at 8:00 am followed by breakfast at 8:30am.  There will be three morning sessions followed by lunch.  After lunch Dr. Kreeft will host a final session that ends at 1:30 pm.  There will be adoration from 1:30-2:30 pm in the Mary Queen of Peace Chapel located on the parish campus.

The cost to attend the retreat is $25. per person, which includes all meals.  You may register at the parish website www.christthekingcatholic.church or by contacting the parish office at 918-584-4788.

A Note from the Pastor

Dear Parishioners,

Do you know what is required for a person to be a Godparent? He or she must be a Confirmed practicing Catholic and at least 16 years old. To be practicing means living the five precepts of the Church. Only one Godparent or Confirmation sponsor is necessary. See The Code of Canon Law canons 872 through 874.

Did you know that extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are to be used only out of necessity? “Only out of true necessity is there to be recourse to the assistance of extraordinary ministers in the celebration of the Liturgy. Such recourse is not intended for the sake of a fuller participation of the laity but rather, by its very nature, is supplementary and provisional.” [151.] “If there is usually present a sufficient number of sacred ministers for the distribution of Holy Communion, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion may not be appointed. Indeed, in such circumstances, those who may have already been appointed to this ministry should not exercise it.” [157.] Redemptionis Sacramentum, which we are covering in adult continuing education classes every Thursday at 7 pm.

God bless,

Fr. Donovan

A Note from the Pastor

Dear Parishioners,

I hope that your Lent is starting well, with more silence and devotion as we cultivate better prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.  One of Pope Francis’ favorite quotes for Lent, that he has been citing for many years, is from St. John Chrysostom:  “No act of virtue can be great if it is not followed by advantage for others. So, no matter how much time you spend fasting, no matter how much you sleep on a hard floor and eat ashes and sigh continually, if you do no good to others, you do nothing great.”  Any penances that we impose on ourselves should be directed towards greater love of God and neighbor.  As the First Letter of St. Peter says, “Above all, let your love for one another be intense, because love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8).  Pope Benedict reflected on almsgiving during his 2008 Lenten Message:  http://w2.vatican.va/content/benedict-xvi/en/messages/lent/documents/hf_ben-xvi_mes_20071030_lent-2008.html

Thank you all for responding generously last week in your almsgiving for the parish.  It is greatly needed.  May God continue to bless you during these 40 days of prayerful preparation for the feast of the Resurrection.

God bless,

Fr. Donovan

Financial Update

There is an update on our ongoing financial crisis.  The good news is that we have been able to reduce the annual deficit by another $24, 000.  We began with around $120,000 of deficit, and now we are nearly half of that with $66,000 of deficit.  We will also be installing thermostat guards and limiting their use almost entirely to save money on utilities, which are our greatest expense.  While the weather is still cold, please dress warmly for Mass, woman may keep their hats on during Mass.

To clarify our parish’s financial situation, given the current level of financial support, this parish cannot sustain its facilities’ maintenance or support a priest.  Failure to bridge the deficit gap would incur tremendous annual debt.  Also, parishes that cannot support a priest become missions of larger, sustainable parishes, which could happen to Immaculate Conception under our next Bishop.

We need to pray, fast, and work to resolve this crisis.

Did you know?

Do you know the 5 minimum requirements are for being a practicing Catholic?

The Precepts of the Church

  1. Attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation and rest from servile labor. There are 6 Holy Days of Obligation in the USA:
    Jan. 1, Ascension, Aug. 15, Nov. 1, Dec. 8, and Dec. 25.
Only Nov. 1 and Dec. 8th are not on Sunday this year.
  2. Confess your sins at least once a year.  If anyone is aware of mortal sin (grave matter, full knowledge, deliberate consent) Confession should be done immediately.
  3. Receive the Eucharist at least once a year during the Easter Season.
  4. Observe the days of fasting and abstinence.  Fasting, 1 meal per day, is for Catholics 18-60. All Fridays of the year are days of penance and abstinence from meat in the Diocese of Tulsa, established by the 1983 Code of Canon law and Bishop Slattery. Abstinence from meat is for Catholics 14-death.
  5. Help provide for the needs of the Church.
